          Veins bursting through the whites of my eyes with a bright crimson glare, retinas barely hanging on to the inside of my skull, and a resident hedgehog inside my throat, all clear signs of a bank holiday weekend. An overall appearance that I have affectionately named the 'Quasimodo come-down'. The thing that I find intriguing about such weekends is no matter what, the hedonism seems to grow exponentially night-by-night, day-by-day, so that come Monday evening you are closer to an intervention than a business meeting. This is made all the more severe if you add glorious sunshine into the equation. When this happens the over-indulgent mind tells you that you must get outside and enjoy yourself and not rot in the dark behind shutters, whilst sipping on PG tips like a chimpanzee.

          Inevitably I meet up with 'the troops' who can blame the nasal congestion on a high pollen count, but struggle to find a decent excuse for the grey, zombified complexion of their skin. Even if the previous night's excursions have not been carried out en-mass you can guarantee that they all followed a similar criteria, leading us to this patch of grass in the sunshine communicating in a language closer to the Neolithic era than any eloquent form of English. We take comfort in the fact that we are all getting 'too old for this shit', but at the same time an evening spent on numerous types of narcotics does 'make you feel young again!'. I have noticed recently that my group of friends is starting increasingly to resemble the cast from the Magic Roundabout, which I don't think is a criticism, it is an observation of the eclectic, colourful, and section-able people that I choose to spend my waking hours with.

          If you are unlucky enough to have contact with the parental agencies during this weekend blur, either over the radio or face to face, you will undoubtedly have to explain to them why it two o'clock in the afternoon and you are still in bed or why it is three o'clock and you are already far from being responsible for your own actions. There are two replies I think tend to work in these eventualities. First, if you are hit with the old truism that you can get plenty of 'sleep when you are dead', reply that you know this, but you rather enjoy doing it when you're alive. Second, if you have to explain why you're shit-faced and tripping-out on a Monday afternoon, well that's easy, it's a bank holiday!

This autumn, Channel 4 intends to broadcast a weekly documentary series about a variety of people living or working in Notting Hill.  Each week, viewers will watch the drama of those people’s lives unfold as it actually happens.

For the people who take part it will be an adventure.  Millions of viewers will see them make life-changing decisions, as they make them, and will send advice and comment to them through blogs and similar means.

Most of the people in the programme will have dramatic things happening in their lives.  They might be about to start a new job or quit one; have surgery; get married; have a baby; move house; cope with a dying relative; start a new business; open a bar; hear the result of an important decision or make one themselves. 

Unlike other documentaries which take weeks, even months, to edit, this series will be immediate. What viewers will see will have happened in the last seven days. It’s real life, shown on television as it happens.

Notting Hill has been chosen as the location because it is such a well-known and socially mixed area.

The people in the series will be living their life open to public gaze.   Some people might not like this, but many others will think it is an incredibly exciting prospect and will be thrilled to be taking part in such a radically new kind of television programme.

Im always a little nervy about this date, not too sure why but I think im subconsciously hideously superstitious. I must be, I have spent my entire time here freezing when I see a magpie and panicking as I never can remember that stupid rhyme. And so follows a rather wonky sort of curtsey/bow/spin with me muttering some combination of “morning/Evening/afternoon mrs Magpie” while feeling like a complete idiot, but also a slight twinge of relief, in the knowledge that the world will not end now. Thank god, thank god my magical words will have held up that tsunami, or quietened that volcano, or stopped that meteor in it tracks. Powerful stuff.

Good news tho my eye is finally feeling better. Oops….touch wood.

Just in time really as I have just finished stuffing my belongings; once again, back into the same suitcase they have appeared and reappeared from so many times on this journey. I sometimes feel guilty as im sure most of the other suitcases purchased are left to sleep until same time next August when they are taken on a two week trip to Corfu, then back home to the comfort of the attic/ airing cupboard to recover, safe in the knowledge they wont be called upon again for at least another year. My poor thing has been dragged all over the place thru rain and sun, and I have been a little mean as my usual military packing technique taught by ‘sergeant mother’ has been cast aside for a more freestyle, casual effort which means poor Carl (the case) suffers a some what bloated tummy until I spill his guts again at my next destination.
Hungry now, oh and must shave my legs.

Apparently there’s a new language in existence... it is called “AMERICAN”. ‘Wicked’ becomes ‘dope’, ‘mate’ becomes ‘dude’, and ‘shit’ becomes ‘turd’.

I don’t like this language. I have struggled to keep the English language alive while in NYC, correcting any badly spoken American that comes in my way. Sort of like a language superhero... “super-language- girl!” I fight the crime of bad speech! Hahaha.... hmm...maybe not.  Sounds like an awful education video...

Anyway, I have realised that most Americans believe that speaking “American” is a valid alternative to speaking English. It is not.

What is going on is that they do not know how to pronounce certain vowels. Unlike the English, the rooolllliinng of the tongue is actually quite difficult for them. So they replace them.  Tomato becomes “to-may-ta”, body becomes ‘ba-day’ and ‘awful’ is just not said at all. I don’t think they know how to...hahahaha!

The funniest thing about all this is of course we live in a big world yadda yadda and of course the English language will mould to whichever culture it is utilised in yadda yadda....but COME ON! At least say the word properly? It is ENGLISH after all! Bad enough the chavs can’t, let us not allow the world to think it is okay to say ‘ant-eye’ instead of ‘ant-I’ and ‘Shak-er-speare’ instead of ‘Shakespeare’!

What makes it hilarious while being here is of course, true to American “we are always right” style, I have New Yorkers correcting ME when I speak! Oh how very dare you sir!

“whatchu say? no you saying it wrong....you want warer?”

” No my good man, I want WATER”

And my goodness , don’t even get me started on the acronyms!! !

“OMG I LMFAO-ed when you said TTYL because TBH I thought you said BRB”

Translation??

“Oh my God I laughed my fucking ass off when you said talk to you later because to be honest I thought you said ‘be right back’”

And no, this language isn’t just for blackberries...people SAY them to!! It’s totally coded, I sometimes have to decipher conversations!

Now let me not sound like I am bashing the yanks...not fully. Haha. They have given us some brilliant words namely awesome, douche-bag, anything-licious and “ASS-WIPE” (love it love it!) so, you know, it is not all bad. I do wish the English language wasn’t so pummelled though. It is most distressing hearing words said in an alternative form especially words we love to say. I mentioned in my last article about “twat” becoming  “t-weight” here???...that constitutes as a crime against the English language!! It hurt me, it hurt me to hear it! So till I am back home I will continue to speak eloquently. I will strive to keep pronunciations tight and I will “rah-rah” all the way downtown!
